ZRCS and UNICEF Use Drama to Champion Better Sanitation

More than 450 community members in Chifunabuli District, Luapula Province, have been engaged through drama and cultural performances aimed at promoting improved sanitation practices and accelerating efforts to end open defecation.

The initiative, implemented by the Zambia Red Cross Society with support from UNICEF Zambia, used locally relevant storytelling to turn sanitation and hygiene messages into engaging community conversations. Through drama and cultural performances, participants were encouraged to adopt improved sanitation practices, use adequate toilet facilities and take collective action to prevent the spread of disease. The community engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to promote healthier, more resilient communities by addressing open defecation through behavior change and public participation.
