Neutrality
- Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature
- This will ensure that the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement can continue to enjoy the confidence of all parties.
Impartiality
- Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, gender, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.
- It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress
Independence
- Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is independent. The National Society while auxiliaries in humanitarian service of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries must always maintain their autonomy, so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of the Movement
Voluntary Service
- Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a voluntary relief movement that is not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
Universality
- Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a world-wide movement in which all Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have equal status and share equal responsibility and duties in helping each other.
Unity
- Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement must be open to all and must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory. For this reason, there can only be one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country at any time.
