STARTING OVER: LINDAH'S JOURNEY TO RECOVERY

For years, Lindah Hikapumpa built her livelihood one goat at a time. Then, when floods swept through Bweengwa's Hichiyasa area in Southern Province earlier this year, much of that hard-earned progress was washed away.

The mother of six was at the market when she received a distressing call from her children informing her that rising floodwaters had damaged their home. The devastation did not end there. Of the 26 goats she depended on for income, only six survived. "I was devastated. The goats were my source of livelihood, and I did not know how I would provide for my children," she recalls.

In May, Lindah received cash assistance from Zambia Red Cross Society HQ with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). She plans to use the funds to repair her home, purchase food and replace essential household items. "This support has given me hope. It is helping me meet my family's immediate needs as I begin rebuilding what we lost," she says.
