ZAMBIA RED CROSS SOCIETY PROVIDES ZMW FIVE MILLION IN SUPPORT TO FLOOD-AFFECTED HOUSEHOLDS IN NALOLO DISTRICT

On 4 July 2026, Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) officially launched the distribution of emergency cash assistance to 1,187 households displaced by floods in Nalolo District earlier this year. The intervention is aimed at helping affected families meet their immediate basic needs, such as food and shelter, after their fields and crops were destroyed by the floods.

Under the emergency cash assistance programme, each household received a one-time payment of ZMW 3,000, representing ZMW 600 per month for five months, at a total cost of ZMW 3,561,000.

In addition to the cash assistance, ZRCS distributed essential non-food items (NFIs) valued at ZMW 2,311,843. The items included blankets, sleeping mats, water storage containers, and chlorine to help families improve their living conditions and maintain safe and clean water and good hygiene practices while recovering from the disaster.

The distribution was officially flagged off by Nalolo District Commissioner Mrs. Namatama Mundandi, who expressed gratitude to ZRCS for supporting vulnerable communities during a difficult period.

"I convey our deepest appreciation to ZRCS for standing with our communities during this challenging time. This intervention provides both immediate relief and recovery support, helping families restore comfort and dignity while giving beneficiaries the flexibility to purchase food and other priority household needs based on their individual circumstances," she said.

Speaking during the event, Zambia Red Cross Society Disaster Management Board Chairperson Mr. Evans Mpangaiche reaffirmed the national society's commitment to supporting the Government of Zambia in strengthening community resilience. He emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness and early action, noting that ZRCS will continue working with cooperating partners to reduce disaster risks and strengthen local capacities so that communities are better prepared for future emergencies.

The response is being implemented under the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), demonstrating the continued commitment of the Red Cross Movement to protecting lives, supporting recovery, and building resilient communities across Zambia.
